Flyin' High in Week 5

You guys absolutely rock! It was so motivating to see hundreds of runners out there tonight working those hills and accomplishing more and more. I saw a lot of smiles on runners' faces tonight and I have to tell you - that's pretty exciting. Of course we're all trying to get into shape and succeed, but I hope you are truly enjoying the experiences along the way - that's what will keep you coming back week after week. Hopefully you are all feeling great and ready to take on even more challenges. Happy 4th to y'all! Mary

Great night for running? We need HEAT and HUMIDITY if we're really training for Abe's Amble. Everyone in my group said, "It won't be like this on race day, will it?"

Is it week 5 already?? Gosh this is going so fast!! I agree it was a nice relief to have a cool breeze last night. Our leader chewed us up and spit us out on our workout and I don't think I could have made it thru if it was any hotter (Luv ya, Karen :-])
Running is like a box of chocolates.....you never know, race day may be 72 and rainy!

If you are looking for a tough workout, go to the track tonite, Jack has a real treat in store for us!!

Hey Corky - that's what it's all about - WooooHoooo! I've NEVER been athletic, so thinking I could even do Abe's last year was a stretch for me and believe me, I was overweight, asthmatic, and had a hard time climbing a flight of stairs without huffing and puffing. I turned 40 and said, "Oh, no - I've just gotta get my rear in gear and DO SOMETHING." To tell you the truth, I was not so darn excited about it all when I started. But I had great leaders (Connie and Linda rock!) and couldn't let anyone see me quit. Besides - now I can't quit because of how much fun I have watching all of you discover how neat this all is.

YOUR FIRST RACE BY WEEK 5 - Oh, girl, the places you're going to go. Stick with it. Don't give up. If you think you're going to quit - let us know. We'll do everything we can to get you on track, literally. Take the good days and the bad days together, cause in the end - it all evens out and it's all good.

Oh, and the whole no time for yourself thing? I understand completely. After 22 years of raising kids, working, and being there for EVERYONE else, it's now my turn. What better thing can you do for yourself? Think of how strong you get with each footstep forward - you'll find that the strength you gain in running spills over into so many other areas of your life.

Just gotta say...Abe's Army is the best thing that the SRRC has organized. Corky's comment from above just underscores that fact.

The mission of our club is to promote running and fitness. Not fast people running faster. Not skinny little Olympic-looking people keeping the sport to themselves.

How many of you would be members of the SRRC, or even run a race, if it was not for the Army?

This program has brought an energy to the club that could not be matched by any kind of membership recruitment that we could probably even imagine.

Over the seven years of the Army I have heard so many stories like Corky's. People who have lost dozens of pounds. People who quit smoking. People who were recovering from bypass surgery. People who were too scared or intimidated to run or even workout on their own.

Keep it going folks!! No one said it was easy, but it ain't a big deal if it is easy...and running a 10K is a BIG DEAL! The comradarie and sense of accomplishment of Abe's Army is worth the price of admission!

And keep these stories coming! You rock!
